1) What is Benzalkonium Chloride (BAC)?
Benzalkonium chloride solutions are fast-acting biocidal agents with a moderately long duration of action. They are active against bacteria and some viruses, fungi, and protozoa.
Benzalkonium chloride (BAC) is a wide spectrum quaternary ammonium antibacterial agent. It is cationically charged and induces antibacterial action through attraction to the negatively charged bacterial membrane.
Benzalkonium chloride is also classified as an organic salt classified as a quaternary ammonium compound. It has three main categories of use: as a biocide, a cationic surfactant, and a phase transfer agent.

2) What is Biocide?
A chemical agent that may be applied topically in or on living tissue (antiseptic), as well as inanimate objects (disinfectants) in order to inhibit growth or kill microorganisms.
3) What is a Cationic Surfactant?
Benzalkonium chloride also possesses surfactant properties, dissolving the lipid phase effectively tearing the outer film surface of a microorganism and increasing drug penetration, making it a useful excipient (medium for a drug or other active substance).

Surfactants are used to reduce surface tension between a liquid and a liquid or solid/gas, the following are some of its uses:
- Laundry detergents
- Softeners for textiles
- Soaps
